Opening our inner selves

This book is an amazing set of deeply personal stories, so raw and real that they made me deeply reflect on my own childhood. Tying those stories to related scientific research was done masterfully and helped me think through the lessons of each one. It also helps me understand my friends better because I see patterns in their behavior as adults that I see now may relate to their experiences with their parents while growing up.

Compelling

This book gave an accessible and informative dive into the psychology of attachment through the lense of powerful real life stories. Linking the scientific theory to human experience in this way created a fascinating and, at times, heart wrenching window into behaviour and relationships. q

Couldn’t recommend this book enough

A fantastic, accessible psychology book about the theory of attachment.

Theory is interspersed with long-running real-life interviews of characters that reappear each chapter to illustrate a point, in a way that brings what the author is teaching us to life and makes you really care about the interviewees. I will remember their stories and progression a long time after the book.

The author and narrator’s voice is good to listen to, and her emphasis and intonation adds to the understanding and never detracts.

I have already recommended this to a friend experiencing family relationship issues as providing a clear framework through which to understand them. It should be required reading for everyone!

An engaging and reflective listen which journeys through attachment theory with a grounding in people’s lived experiences

Laura’s book is a great way to ground your understanding of what attachment theory means in everyday life through the reflections of people’s experiences. Recommended for anyone interested in learning more in a really accessible way or as a refresher for practitioners like me who really enjoy listening to people’s story’s to learn how understand and support more.

Enlightening, entertaining, essential

I found this a really interesting, gripping listen and strongly suspect everyone who listens to it will feel the same - it’s caused me to reflect on my upbringing, how I have and how I will interact in my relationships and friendships, and how I will (try) to behave around my children.

I knew a little about attachment theory before downloading this - as in, new it was a ‘thing’ and some generalisations about it. The genius about the author’s work here is how she has distilled the academic side of it into a clear and approachable (but not dumbed down) narrative, and how she has woven that through the personal stories of the interviewees (which in themselves would make a worthwhile novel). Can’t recommend it more highly.
Illuminating and insightful. Download it!

Highly Recommend

A really powerful book - made me reflect on my upbringing big time, a must have for anyone that wants to be a better parent / friend / partner / family member / neighbour.
I'm fascinated by attachment theory and after listening to this, realise I have been totally getting it wrong - as have lots of professionals! Really important book.
Great listen - loved the interviews combined with thorough but accessible research. Highly recommend.

Will have to listen to this one again

There's a lot to get into with this book, and I have not herd of 'attachment theory' before, but it certainly left a lot to think about. The narration could of been a lot better and less robotic. I will give this one another go.
