About this listen

This is one of the great untold stories of the 20th century.

It is a firsthand account of a mission by an SAS soldier sent behind the Iron Curtain by MI6 to find someone who didn't necessarily want to be found and how, on a follow-up mission, he found himself manoeuvring against a mysterious KGB officer and a murder plot by Kremlin hardliners.

If the plot had succeeded, it would have given the Russians the excuse they were looking for to roll out the tanks across East Germany, the Berlin Wall would not have fallen - and the map of Europe would look very different today.

It tells of rooftop chases, the interrogation of terrorists to gain vital information, a beautiful East German female (who he suspected of being a Stasi spy), betrayal by people he trusted, and an escape through forests pursued by enemy agents and ending in a climactic gun battle at Colditz castle, formerly used by the Soviets as a psychiatric hospital to detain dissidents.

In James Bond novels, it is MI6 operators who carry out this type of work, but in reality, when facing a committed foe in an isolated and deadly environment, the intelligence agencies call upon members of the British Special Forces. This is the first insider account of how UK operators working undercover do what needs to be done in order to protect the UK's interests abroad - revealing their hidden hand in world events.

I read the description of this book and was interested immediately. As a fan of the fiction of John le carre I was expecting something similar. I was not disappointed. The book flows along in a way that keeps you hooked from the start.

The story is so intriguing and exciting its hard to believe that someone actually went through such an ordeal. I cannot sing its praises enough.

It's all the great spy books rolled into a true story which is shocking, exciting and upsetting in equal measure. A truly epic story.

Shockingly brave and unbelievably true

morally courageous and gripping throughout, the writer brings the cold war to light. Rarely do we read about the empathy and internal conflict of being a special forces soldier.

outstanding

As someone in my 60s and having spent time in West Berlin in the 80s , (not doing anything remotely dangerous , I might add) it allows a bit of reminiscing of a time past, it' maybe a true story or maybe not ?? , but enjoyed the book.

Maye it's true maybe not ? , but enjoyed the book.

An enjoyable read that could be recommended to others if there wasn’t doubt over this non fiction being fabricated.
I’m not sure how the publisher confirms the authenticity of any spy story. But some acting soldiers from the same period appear to draw great doubt over the content. Some content also appears to have been plagerised.
Bit disappointing to find this out after a promising start.

Great story. Shame about the cloud of doubt

The plot is very good, but the book itself frustrates. Some of the chapters feel incomplete or jump to something completely different which confuses. Overall, I left with more questions than answers.

Good story, but could have been better..

This book was a great surprise, the content and storytelling was great, with careful descriptions playing their part. At times felt abit Hollywood but never to a point where I would have questioned the validity of the story. Recommended
