Agatha, en jordbunden, flittig studerende fra Cambridge, Stella – sværmerisk, usikker og uselvstændig, Prue med de lange, rødlakerede negle og et ualmindelig godt blik for mænd.
De deler et lille, klamt loftskammer og spiser grød kl. 5 om morgenen, før de skal i stalden for at malke og muge ud! I løbet af få dage har Prue ikke længere lange negle, og Stella er for træt til at drømme.
Den gode britiske fortælletradition, som kendetegnes af bl.a. Maeve Binchy og Rosamunde Pilcher, føres her videre af Angela Huth.
