How can we maintain optimal levels of pressure so we perform at our best? What systems and tools can we use to own the pressure? What techniques can we apply to regain composure and situational control when under pressure? All of us experience moments when we are under pressure and need to perform to a high standard.
While the right level of pressure enhances our performance, excessive pressure leads to cognitive overload, stress, and compromises our ability to perform. How can we own the pressure to achieve peak performance?
Drawing on 20 years of leadership experience in high pressure emergency medical and rescue situations, the author describes the consequences of pressure, both positive and negative, and teaches the strategies we need to attain states of peak performance. Using first-hand accounts of high-pressure situations within emergency medicine, the book covers relevant aspects such as cognitive aids, teamwork, organisational culture, and tactical leadership. It also describes how we can use different training and simulation techniques to prepare teams to deal with excessive pressure.
It will appeal to doctors, ambulance clinicians, firefighters, military personnel, rescue teams, and business leaders as well as anyone hoping to improve their own performance during high-pressure situations.
©2020 Stephen Hearns (P)2022 Stephen HearnsAs you might expect, the book is set out in a logical manner with the initial chapters explaining how pressure impacts us as human beings and helps understand the "why" around how we behave and act. With that baseline established, the books moves onto how we can adapt and preform better. As an engineer, I liked the analogy with pressure systems and the components of a pressure pump, pressure control, pressure testing and (essentially) a pressure relief valve.
Given Stephen Hearns background and qualifications / experience, you could be forgiven for thinking the book might be a very heavy and technical read but it is in fact very accessible and written in a style that keeps you engaged throughout.
The book closes with a couple of case studies that not only illustrate performance under pressure but give a fascinating insight to medical retrieval / prehospital care seldom seen or understood out with the specialists who provide this service.
I also have a hard copy of the book (on kindle at least) but found the audiobook a great resource to refresh the memory with on long drives - continual improvement is key to maintaining and updating skills !

Valuable insights related through vivid stories of life at the sharp end of emergency medicine and rescue retrieval. The format kept me listening and left me inspired.
Relatable to any team striving to attain greater performance. The lessons learned by Steve and his colleagues inspire understanding and improvement. This should be a handbook for all business ,military and medical leaders and personnel.

The book is well structured and gives a unique insight in to ‘thinking about thinking’ with useful tips to remain in the ‘sweet spot’ of just enough pressure to work to your maximum capacity.
I would recommend it to anyone who works in high pressure scenarios or anyone who has a passing interest in the human factors associated with these types of roles.

I’ve listened to this book twice from start to finish and now I’m dipping into certain sections, as and when needed, as part of my reflective practice. To me, this is a must-listen for anyone wishing to improve their performance and, I would suggest, whether under pressure or not. But then, when are we not performing under pressure these days?
With his clear narration, Dr Hearns takes us through the theory of what affects our performance and how to improve it, along with practical tools and suggestions. Plenty of anecdotes and stories help us grasp the concepts and options available to us, in a real-world context. A must, in this day and age, are tips for looking after each other’s wellbeing.
There’s so much packed into this book, you’ll probably want to listen to it more than once or replay sections to take it all in. I've found it invaluable. It’s hard to do the book justice in a short review. The best option is to have a listen!
