Book Description:

Sebelius Sallow, a clockmaker in the snowy-streets of 1836 London, is often overlooked and unappreciated. But on Christmas Eve, a series of life-changing events opens up a world of paranormal uncertainty.

Guided by the personified Seven Deadly Sins and their counterparts, the Seven Heavenly Virtues, Sebelius is forced to confront the echoes of his past in a darkly humorous and thought-provoking tale of redemption, steeped in gothic gloom and moral reckoning.

Themes: Courage. Greed. Redemption.

Finally Something Different

This was brought to my attention on social media, so I was dubious, to say the least. You never know quite what to expect, but I can say with all honestly this was definitely worth purchasing. I was delightfully surprised by how beautifully written this story is, and how much I actually enjoyed it.

Joyce’s tone is perfectly in keeping with the Victorian style of writing, and his ability to bring not just characters but entire places to life through vivid descriptions, fascinating details, and charming twists and turns left me wishing it didn’t have to end. Like Oliver Twist, I found myself wanting more! The Dickens-style humour isn’t the only delight, but this story has a real gift for pulling at the heartstrings, and Joyce had me feeling a whole host of emotions throughout the story. I think it correct to say that ‘A Christmas Carol’ has been done to death (pardon the pun), and this tale is original and fits nicely within that Dickensian Christmas genre.

Christopher Tester is a brilliant narrator. His voice perfectly captures the period, his vocal ability is impressive, and he allows each of these richly-drawn characters to have their own identity.

If you love ‘A Christmas Carol’ then you are sure to love this.

A New Christmas Classic

Such beautiful imagery and wordsmanship! A stunning commentary on the concepts of love and grief, with a strong moral message of Do As You Would Be Done To.. Beautifully written, a new Christmas Classic!

Loved this! something different for me but I'm so glad I bought it.

What a Christmas story!

I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this book, especially since I usually stick to crime fiction. As the author’s sole purpose was to create a Dickensian Christmas classic that represents the LGBT+ community, I decided to show my support and “try something new.” Yes, I took the plunge, and I was NOT disappointed.

I read the book first, but after seeing so much buzz about the audiobook on social media, I had to buy that as well! It was absolutely brilliant. The characters truly came to life, and the narrator captured the tone as you’d expect. Perfection.

Having never read Dickens before, I found this surprisingly accessible, and the touching storyline swept me away. And that twist? Epic! I couldn’t stop reading / listening… it completely hooked me from the moment I stepped into Sebelius Sallow’s little clock shop in Chapter One.

I strongly recommend this, and it would make a fantastic Christmas gift for readers from young adult and up. It’s probably the most beautiful hardback I own, and to me, this is a timeless treasure.
