About this listen

Many of us experience anxiety from time to time. Anxiety is a healthy way for our bodies to prepare for and anticipate upcoming events and situations where we need to take action. It prompts us to think, to plan and to initiate growth and change in our lives. Anxiety helps us to know what is right and wrong, and it lets us know when we have taken the wrong path in our life.

Anxiety can be pervasive. Some of us experience panic attacks and anxiety so severe that it affects our ability to function in our daily lives. We are so overcome by anxiety that we can sometimes cease to take action or make a plan. Anxiety can cloud our judgments and cause us to make bad decisions. It eats through our stomach and causes ulcers. It gives us insomnia at night so that we cannot sleep.

Jealousy is another form of anxiety. We are anxious because our partner is late. We worry that he or she hasn't called. Our anxiety takes hold of us, and we become sensitive to every activity of another person. We cannot just live in the present moment. We are always waiting for the next shoe to drop. We fear abandonment, change, and the future. Everything starts to seep in and our thoughts run rampant with worries and fears.

Anxiety is healthy, but sometimes anxiety can become too much. It can turn into paranoia and suspiciousness. It can drive our bad behaviors, causing us to detach from others. Detachment then leads us to feel painfully lonely, indifferent, disconnected, depressed and rejected. We begin having abnormal reactions to situations with others, and then those abnormal reactions sometimes become more and more repetitive until they are habits which we struggle to break free from.
