About this listen

A man is dead.

The killer is a woman.

But what secrets lie beneath the surface - so dark that a man has to die?

Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution.

The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

But nothing is as it appears on the surface. A web of complex relationships is gradually revealed and it seems that everybody has something to hide. As each horrific secret is exposed, Tom Douglas begins to realise that this is much more than a simple murder case. And he has a terrible dilemma to face - whether to punish the guilty, or protect the innocent.

This book kept me gripped from start to finish. The mounting sense of dread and horror was sustained right up until all the disturbing facts had finally been revealed. This was definitely a book that would have you questionning your own sensibilities, and what you would do in the same situation!

Brilliant!!

I really want to give this audiobook a 7 star rating for both its storyline and its performance - both were incredible. when a book keeps me awake till nearly 3 in the morning because, at bedtime, I just have to finish it (and there's 3 hours left) and I find I have tears running down my cheeks for the last 5 minutes it has to be compelling, well written, well read and utterly heart wrenching - but so possibly real.

oh my....

I listened to ‘The Back Road’ years ago, not realising it was the second book in the series. I wasn’t blown away at the time and didn’t bother to listen to further books in the series. Years on, I decided to start with the first in the series and am kicking myself at waiting so long. This is such a good story; well told and well narrated, although Hugo’s voice characterisation did grate a bit. I’m going to give The Back Road’ another go and I’m looking forward to a Rachel Abbott marathon over the coming days.

Outstanding.

Loved this even tho I guessed who had dunnit. Not sure about the ending. I won’t say more than that so as not to spoil it. The characters were good and likeable and the narration was brill. On to read the next one.

Loved this first book in a new series

I couldn't put this book down. Many years ago I was trapped in a marriage with a controlling and coercive man. The situation was not quite so extreme so I didn't have to take such serious remedial action although there were many times I wished I had. The story was well told and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Brilliant!

Gripping story, excellent narration, sympathetic characters.

In all honesty I was a little disheartened when I purchased this audiobook, I had read some of the reviews and had thought it was going to be different. I carried on listening though and by chapter 5 I was hooked, the story builds nicely with twists added well before it could start dragging out. The narrator is brilliant, and does the different characters superbly. Book 2 is downloading as I write this!!

Great story!

Enjoyable enough, Narrator over ‘acts’ a lot which is very annoying and when narrating the letters makes Laura sound like a rather simple and overly naive adolescent.

Narrator very irritating
