About this listen

An embittered and disillusioned policeman takes revenge on society in this riveting serial killer thriller.

Retired from the force, Detective Superintendent Jeffrey Brandt goes native. He stabs a woman but holds back from killing her. Frustrated that no one takes any notice, he ups his game. Next time, he'll kill.

Brandt fully knows how the police work. He'll use this knowledge to win a sick game; after all, he's chosen the rules.

The crime scenes are spotless, Brandt's covered his tracks. There is no forensic evidence. Yet each killing has his unmistakable print.

Faced with the challenge of discovering his identity is DCI Stella Johnson. Quick-witted and uncompromising, she rises to Brandt's macabre challenge. But if she finds the killer, what will she do given that he is always one step ahead?

Who will win this mortal battle of wits between hunter and hunted?

Not a bad story but the unsatisfactory end and conclusion makes you feel you've wasted your time listening to the hours that wenr before. Shame.

Unsatisfactory ending

the narrator was not very good he sounded like a poor man's Alan Bennett the story was reasonably entertaining and kept me interested but the ending was very poor it's like he forgot to write the last chapter

not the best

I quite like the fact you knew who the murderer was from the beginning it was different. I think it’s part of a series so I’m going to see if the next ones are free too.

For a free book it was ok

Some narrators, male and female can 'do' the other sex in a way that is properly representative, even if you know the narrator is of the opposite gender to the character. This rather turgid narrator can not - his female detective chief inspect whines and whinges and is difficult to take seriously. And that is only half the problem.

The story might have had legs, but begins to lose interest about 2/3 of the way through with an unfinished ending.

It might have been good but...

The narrator was not fit for purpose and just as I prayed the conclusion would make up for the poir narration and storyline….it ended.

Painful

If i'd paid for this book. I would have demanded my money back.. I'm incredibly dull piece of writing. Accompanied by a narrator who was equally dull

So dull it hurts.

But for the fact rating is required I really cannot even bring myself to rate this book truthfully I wouldn’t give it any stars. The story line was at best confusing, the characters were given little or no personality and the amount of inconsequential detail was overwhelming and did absolutely nothing to improve the book. I did not need to know that”she took a tea towel off the hook to wipe a dish, then put it in the wash basket to the left of her” totally unnecessary detail. As for the narrator........boring is an understatement his monotone voice was good only to help one sleep.
I hate writing bad reviews, I know how hard it is to write but this was the worst book I have read this year.

How not to write a book

Absolutely awful narration. I had to give up a few chapters in, flat and really monotone!

Don’t bother.

I didn’t much like anything about this book other than the possibility of the relationship between the two of them. Long drawn out and pointless with a rushed ending that felt like the author had a train to catch. I still don’t understand the inclusion of vast swathes of pages that seemed utterly irrelevant - the football for example?? Narration very strange and slow and odd.

Without direction
