About this listen

John Carr has recently left the SAS, after a long and distinguished career, and is now working for a Russian oligarch in the murky world of private security.

But an incident from his past - in which three terrorists were brutally killed - suddenly comes back to haunt him.

Tracked by a hit man out for revenge, John Carr is forced to step over the line to defend himself and his family. It's a cruel and violent world - and one he thought he'd left behind.

But some wars never end.

Patriot Games meets Taken in Once a Pilgrim. John Carr shows all the Reacher-esque hallmarks of a cold-blooded antihero doing what needs to be done, whatever the consequences.

James Deegan MC is a fantastic new voice in the thriller genre, writing with unprecedented authority and authenticity.

Including an exclusive interview with the author.

Critic reviews

"As close as it gets to the real thing." (Mark 'Billy' Billingham, MBE, former SAS Warrant Officer and star of TV's SAS: Who Dares Wins)
"Authentic detail and heart stopping narrative grips you from the outset bringing the shadowy world of today's special forces bursting in to life in a way that other authors of the genre couldn't hope for. The best thriller I've read in years." (Major Chris Hunter, QGM, author of Eight Lives Down and Extreme Risk)
"Exposes the raw with the reality. This is a gripping high intensity drama." (Bob Shepherd, ex SAS Warrant Officer and best-selling author)

Really disappointed in the performance of the narrator who obviously hadn’t done his homework prior to his reading of the book. His narration of abbreviations is embarrassing as is his pronunciation of Irish place names eg Lough as Low. The story was clearly well written and I would look forward to Mr Deegan’s next book with a different performer

Great story poor performance

A great read with authenticity and knowledge of both the SAS and Northern Ireland particularly back in the day. One of the best thrillers I’ve read for a while. Looking forward to the next instalment . Great first book for James

First class story

A very enjoyable audio book, good story and good detail, a few questionable Belfast accents, but apart from that I would highly recommend

A very enjoyable listen.

Overall a great story of good pace. Cracking listen, nice and long too.
Only let down a touch by some dodgy pronunciations. As a Scottish narrator I'd have expected better familiarity with some names, places and general terms. some were baffling, others made me chuckle.

Still can't take that away from a decent book, look forward to another!

Great story, great pace.

What a great book, I hadn't heard of this Author before, but will definitely be reading the next in the series. The language was choice, but apparently realistic for the genre. It was well considered, a good pace, I hated the baddies and liked the goodies! I know some have complained about the narrator, and for the first five or so minutes, I wondered if it would get to me, but it really suited the book and the subject matter. No complaints from me!

Loved it!

I thought the book was fantastic. The story itself is dark and gritty and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre or has a interest in the SAS or the Armed Forces.

Excellent narrator, excellent book.
