Los intereses literarios de Octavio Paz se manifestaron de manera muy precoz, y publicó sus primeros trabajos en diversas revistas literarias. Sus preocupaciones sociales también se hicieron presentes a temprana edad y en 1937 realizó un viaje a Yucatán con la intención de crear una escuela para hijos de trabajadores.
