Un soir de vent noir, Mouchette, 14 ans, emprunte les bois pour retourner dans son foyer, une masure imprégnée de misère, d’alcoolisme et de maladie. La pluie s’abat sur la jeune fille lorsqu’elle croise le chemin d’Arsène, qui lui propose de s’abriter chez lui. L’homme l’enivre d’histoires extraordinaires pour l’impressionner. Le genièvre réchauffe la gorge et échauffe le corps du braconnier. Mouchette, sans défense, est violée. Quelque temps plus tard, sa mère décède sans que l’enfant ait pu lui confier son terrible fardeau, ce sentiment de honte qui ne la quittera plus, jusqu’au drame.
