Her city is under siege.
The zombies are coming back.

In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back.
The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses. Nona would prefer to live an ordinary life with the people she loves, with Pyrrha and Camilla and Palamedes, but she also knows that nothing lasts forever.
And each night, Nona dreams of a woman with a skull-painted face...

It's been a couple of years since I last visited the Locked Tomb series so I decided I'd give Nona a listen. Nona lives in a turbulent city with Cam and Pyrrah who look after her. She's friends with a bunch of local kids from school. But there's something a bit different about Nona...
- Not quite as confusing as Harrow the Ninth but Nona still took a while to make sense. This might be due to the gap in reading but also seems like Muir's writing style too. She throws out the tidbits of info in a seemingly random way then brings them together(ish) for the end.
- Nona was super sweet and I loved her naïve view of the world and how things worked. I particularly liked how she interacted with the other characters and her foray into friendship.
- We meet some familiar (and occasionally hidden) faces from previous books. I did enjoy how those characters have changed due to events and how they move forward.
I eagerly await Alecto the Ninth after the epilogue of this book. A worthy entry to the series.

Excellent characterisation and performance
Read really well, super enjoyed the story the second time around. This is one of the great examples of an excellent author combining with a fantastic narrator, each character has so much added depth and feeling, perfect for those who read it on paper and want to enjoy it a second time around. Also those on their first read

God jokes are the best!
“Sounds like the start of a joke, right? Two scientists, an engineer, a detective, a lawyer, and an artist walk into a bar to help me become God.”
Did you know that cows have best friends and complex social relationships? Did you know they watch sunsets? Or even that they exhibit mourning behaviour for other cows? No? Well, those are just some of the things you'll learn in Nona the Ninth. But you might say: 'I thought this was a book about necromances lesbians in space? And it still is! Talk about versatility.
Never expected that God would be my favourite in a book series, especially when this God in particular is named John, but that's honestly one of the least surprising things in this book. Everyone absolutely DELIVERS as a character, whether making me laugh like a maniac, or cry like… also a maniac.
It was so nice to see old characters as well, and how they've grown since we last saw them (can you tell I'm trying to be the least spoilery I can?), but there was a whole cast of new characters to bring us joy, such as Hot sauce, Honesty, Born in the Morning and Kevin.
Another thing I absolutely loved but don't quite know how to articulate was how queer this book was. Yes, the previous two books were quite queer as well, but this one just grabbed gender and told it to fuck off. It was brilliant how the author balanced and played with gender all throughout, and not once did it feel confusing or 'too much'. It made so much sense for these characters, and for the world they live in, and I'm so happy to see a book that treats gender as casually as this one does, but still gives it its proper spotlight. I wish more authors felt comfortable playing with gender in this way and I hope to see a lot more following in Muir's footsteps.
I know this book was meant to be Act I of Alecto the Ninth, and it truly peaked my interest as to how the Quartet will resolve, but it was such a dramatic change to our usual programming I felt as if there was something lacking (also I understand why, but this is the third book we're being kept in the dark about essentially everything, and it gets a bit tiring after a while), which is why this book didn't quite reach 5 stars for me.

A bit disappointing
Weaker than the two previous books. I kept waiting for something to unravel but it didn't happen. Best part is learning more about John's story. Narration is perfect as usual.

No idea what's happening and loving every minute
Love this entire series. Barely understand what's going on most of the time but it's always great and I always want more. I would die for Nona.

If you loved Harrow, you’ll love this.
A bit of a slow one, but goodness it pays off at the end. Moira Quirk’s narration is stellar as always. Can’t recommend enough!

Moira Quirk is a genius
This book is ten times better as an audiobook than as a written book (and it is great as a written book so that is saying something.) The way the narrator gives life to the characters and manages to make the more confusing parts of the book understandable by inflections and pauses is incredible!
