About this listen

Lizzie Miller worries for her family – money is short in their little house, but her beautiful daughter Ruby vows to give them all a better life.

Working as a maid for Mr Banks, Ruby befriends his shy and gentle daughter, Cicely. The two girls hatch a mischievous plan to introduce Ruby to society at a party for the ‘gentry’ of Blackburn, where Ruby meets Luke Arnold, the dissolute heir to his father’s fortunes.

But Ruby soon learns of Luke’s cruel nature and when he slyly turns his charm on Cicely, Ruby feels compelled to warn her, a warning that will put her livelihood and her future on the line …

Overall a good story!

This was spoiled for me by the narrator, she was deadpan & leading me to almost give up. Went all round the houses at times but an enjoyable story.

A woman who wanted too much

At first the story was psychologically interesting. There is a poor, talented girl who has ambitions. But she has a mother who is afraid of everything above her station, and wants to keep her daughter in her class. Mother is really awful and selfish, and abandons her daughter When she has made her dreams come true.

Because of a sadist man the daughter looses almost everything. And she realises that she only wants to get married with the boy next door and live with her family in the poor quarters where water runs down the walls and children get sick. And the mother never understands a thing.

I know some might think that the story is about a woman finding out that only family matters, and what is near you. But I want to warn, morality in this book is really outdated, and it has neither any literary value. The performance is excellent though.
