About this listen

From number-one New York Times best-selling author Fern Michaels comes a brand-new novel that blends her rich, character-driven storytelling with a hint of suspense, as a reclusive young woman struggles to piece her life back together....

Ellie Bowman barely remembers the incident that put her into a coma. When she awoke, filled with unease, all she knew for certain was that her boyfriend, Rick, was missing. She knew she needed to get away from her old life and recover in safety. With the proceeds of a video game she helped develop, Ellie starts over in rural Missouri, working from her cottage and trusting no one except her friend and business partner.

Yet even in this quiet small town, it’s impossible to completely isolate herself. Especially when a curious eight-year-old boy, smitten with Ellie’s pup, stops by every day to talk to him over the fence. Little by little, Ellie is being drawn back into the world through the neighbors and community around her, realizing that everyone has their own fears and obstacles to contend with.

But when Ellie hears that Rick has resurfaced, her nightmares return, and with them, small snippets of memory. No one has heard from Rick since before the incident, so why is he back now? Ellie wants to move forward with her life, but first she must find the courage to look into her past, no matter what she finds there....

kind and interesting

It's quite a sweet book and well narrated. I think that the characters weren't too cliched and we're able to change. I also like the message about strength in community.

Weak ending

I gave it a 3 as I listened to the end, but the ending was so weak I wondered what the story actually was

Great until the end

I love Susan Bennett as a reader so there are no issues there. I loved this story but I was disappointed at the end. It felt rushed like the author just wanted it done and out of the way

Very flat.

I had to finish it as I wanted it to liven up. It didn’t, such a disappointment.

Uplifting

Loved this book. It showed bravery over adversity. And a caring community coming together. The narrator was great

Good story, well read, with a satisfying ending

I liked the story and the different characters. it was easy enough to keep track of who was who and I enjoyed the ending, although there wasn't much grit or excitement, which I do like in a story.

No Way Out

I thought this was going to develop into something really good but it didn’t. I’m not sure whether I missed something about Rick and Ellie but I don’t recall much of the story delving into their earlier relationship. I think the book would’ve been better titled When neighbours help out 🙂

The characters were beautifully designed and developed

However I’m still not sure what the purpose of the book and story was.

The plot was interesting to start with and the characters introduced had promising features, the narration was very good and the blurb suggested thriller, psychological, suspense and drama?

However it never turned out like that for me. It floated along and very soon it became clear there was no tension, no development, no dramatic up and downs. It was all concentrated on the start of the story and then it went flat. It’s an easy listening and enough feel good factor with the characters can keep you going but there isn’t really a suspense how, who and why. The question is rather can the story really keep this uneventful until the end.

The author knows how to write a story and their characters but this was never a thriller, a psychological drama or a crime story. It could have been though very easily but I don’t think it was ever intended to be.

I did stick to it to the end and I didn’t regret listening to it but would really recommend to allocate different attributes and tags to it.
