About this listen

As the war takes its toll, the Nightingale nurses must do their bit for king and country….

Dora is the devoted mother of twin babies, but, determined to help the war effort, she goes back to work at the Nightingale Hospital. More used to nights out in the West End, Jennifer and Cissy volunteer in the hope of tending to handsome soldiers. They soon find out that nursing isn’t quite what they were expecting.

For shy and troubled Eve, the hospital provides an escape from the pressures of home, but the life of a nurse is never easy, especially at wartime.

Can the nurses rally together while war rages all around them? And will the Nightingale Hospital survive the Blitz?

A step back in time.

Beautifully narrated, and wonderfully written.
I couldn't put it down. Very emotional story about the hospital staff during the bombings of WW2.
It was nice that a few of the original characters returned, and it was equally as lovely to experience new ones.
Penelope Freeman's use of different characters voices bought the story to life.
recommended Read.

What made the experience of listening to Nightingales at War the most enjoyable?

The story line was good about a young girl who has a sad life, living with a very unkind aunt when her parents die, until she becomes a nurse and finds herself a life she can be happy in.

What did you like best about this story?

I enjoyed the story line when the main character decides to change her life regardless of threats from her aunt!

What three words best describe Penelope Freeman’s performance?

Character voices exaggerated!

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Childhood sadness evolving into a hardworking caring young woman who eventually believes in herself!!

Any additional comments?

I didn't like the narrators male voices, they were too deep and very slow, no one talks like that! The girls were quite squeaky! Speeding it up ruined the rest!

Not impressed with narration!!

Another brilliant Nightingale’s romantic wartime novel. I loved the way the characters were drawn: the good, bad and the ugly.

Coercive control
