A symphony of contemporary New York told through the magnificent words of its people - from the best-selling author of Londoners.
In the first 20 years of the 21st century, New York City has been convulsed by terrorist attack, blackout, hurricane, recession, social injustice and pandemic. New Yorkers weaves the voices of some of the city's best talkers into an indelible portrait of New York in our time - and a powerful hymn to the vitality and resilience of its people.
Vibrant and bursting with life, New Yorkers explores the nonstop hustle to make it, the pressures on new immigrants, people of colour and the poor. It captures the strength of an irrepressible city that - no matter what it goes through - dares call itself the greatest in the world.
Drawn from millions of words, hundreds of interviews and six years in the making, New Yorkers is a grand portrait of an irrepressible city and a hymn to the vitality and resilience of its people.

Absorbing listen.
I listened to this book over three days and simply immersed myself in the voices and stories. I have been to New York twice and have my own impressions of a city in decline , living off its past glories, which nonetheless seems to consume its residents to whom being a New Yorker seems to be an occupation in itself. Very interesting is the common assumption that everyone is equally impressed with it and that it is so incredibly , amazingly amazing. And yet the undercurrent of anger and the sense that the city is not what it was comes out too, from very different people. I really enjoyed this book and found it illuminating . Read it now, while it is still relevant as I suspect that big changes are coming.

Some great interviews but..
As someone who has recently returned from NYC I found the book to be really interesting, enjoyable and accurate to my experience of the city. The only downside to this book is quite a large emphasis placed on covid time which I think completely distracts from the essence of the book which is about New York as a city and profiles of everyday New Yorkers living their everyday life.
