About this listen

The landmark selection of poems from the greatest poet of our age, read on audio by Seamus Heaney himself.

'His is "close-up" poetry - close up to thought, to the world, to the emotions. Few writers at work today, in verse or fiction, can give the sense of rich, fecund, lived life that Heaney does.' (John Banville)

'More than any other poet since Wordsworth he can make us understand that the outside world is not outside, but what we are made of.' (John Carey)

'Heaney's voice, by turns mythological and journalistic, rural and sophisticated, reminiscent and impatient, stern and yielding, curt and expansive, is one of a suppleness almost equal to consciousness itself.' (Helen Vendler)

Top quality poems.

He was one of a kind. You have to stop and ponder after each reading or you’ll only get a fleeting glimpse at the beauty snd honesty in his well crafted words.

Another Poorly Produced Audiobook from Faber

The content of this audiobook is, of course, faultless. However, 90 unnamed chapters is really not good enough - not good enough for anyone, let alone Seamus Heaney. More lazy work from Faber's audiobook production department, which, unfortunately, seems to be the norm rather than the exception.

Fey

I had heard Heaney reading his poems before - I even went to see him read his poems.
But as a body of work they now just seem fey. I wonder whether he will be held in such esteem in 50 years time? The occasional gem that really does seem to encapsulate something, but... Once I thought he was the greater of the School Bag poets. But no more. I wonder if I am alone in this?
