Before I was discarded for the final time on the doorstep of this place, I had been treated as a hand-me-down. A pushover that no one wanted and needed to get rid of, but I was happier then. The rules were never as strict, the punishments nowhere near as brutal, and no unkind word was ever spoken to me above a whisper. Things changed after I felt the cane for the first time.

Spare the rod and spoil the child extends far greater than anyone can know inside the walls of Our Lady of Heavenly Hope - a place where no such thing exists, and if it does, it died inside of me such a long time ago that I can't remember what it feels like.

The halls have gone silent lately, and I like it best this way. I'll learn to be kind again and I'll bestow it on the person that needs it the most. And in the end, everything will be okay.

ETA: My re-read of this was done via Audio Book and it was amazing. Jessica Blackthorne could not have done a better job!!! She was totally in character. There were times I wondered if Jessica had multiple personalities...that's how good she was!!!!!!

The story of Sister Paloma Grace is one that will take up space in your heart and mind for a long time, if not forever. I read the ebook a while ago and I often think of it. Hearing the wonderful narration that really brings Pally to life has been amazing! Listening to her pain is both beautiful and heartbreaking. Pally is definitely not your run of the mill nun. She has many demons and flaws but these just make her all the more human. There are lots of shock factors in the story but hello, it’s a Yolanda Olson book...so that should be a given. Nefarious is one of my favourites from Yolanda Olson and I will always love Pally. Highly recommended. 5 stars!
