About this listen
Quiet, cautious Pearl has always adored her bold, brash, bad big sister Jodie. When their parents get new jobs at a grand, fusty old boarding school, Melchester College, the girls have to move there – and when they arrive, things start to change. Jodie has always been the leader – but now it's Pearl who's making new friends. Jodie just seems to be getting into more and more trouble – arguing with Mum, scaring the little children, flirting with the gardener. She really doesn't fit in with the posh teenagers at the school.
Pearl begins to wonder if she needs Jodie as much as she used to. But when Firework Night comes around and a tragic event occurs, Pearl realises just how much Jodie means to her.

Jodie was the way she was because of her, she constantly put her down, never praised her, always correcting her over nothing, even hitting her - I know this is an older book when it was more common but it isn't treated as the massive mistake that it is. It is very clear that Jodie's mum is insecure with her own issues, saying things like 'I would have loved this as a child' and trying to act posher than she is, because apparently her childhood home wasn't good. This was projected onto Jodie, and I've seen it in other teenagers in real life that they can't live up to their parent's expectations, or they're sick of being told what to do so they rebel. I would have liked this to have been addressed in some way, but she gets away with it completely, and I feel she sort of prefers how the story ends as if it's almost in her favour.
The performance was the second thing I massively disliked about this book. It says on the Audible page is narrated by Finty Williams - granted, the sample is of Wilson's voice, and I know she reads a lot of her books in person to audiences, but she didn't make any character sound different from the last so I had a hard time understanding who was talking.
Also another review says things are cut out from the audiobook from the original book - I have found a copy of the book and I can confirm some bits are missing, although I don't quite know how much or if it impacted the story much. Audible shouldn't be advertising it as unabridged.
I thought the ending could have been better, even if wanted to go in that direction, it seemed a bit out of the blue. But maybe I was hoping it would end in Jodie taking a stand in some form against everyone who wronged her. She deserved better.
A bit overrated
