About this listen

Guilty. One word on a beggar’s cardboard sign. Now, he is dead, stabbed in a wintry Copenhagen street, the second homeless victim in as many weeks. Dagbladet reporter Jensen, stumbling across the body on her way to work, calls her ex lover DI Henrik Jungersen. As, inevitably, old passions are rekindled, so are old regrets, and that is just the start of Jensen’s troubles. The front page is an open goal, but nothing feels right. When a third body turns up, it seems certain that a serial killer is on the loose. But why pick on the homeless? Is the link to an old murder case just a coincidence? With her teenage apprentice, Gustav, Jensen soon finds herself putting everything on the line to discover exactly who is guilty.

“A nice slice of creepy Scandi-noir.” (Daily Mail)

The protagonist for this story is female, but the male narrator has elected to use an excessively hushed, delicate sing-song parody voice for her which undermines her character and really distracts from the story. A shame because the story is pretty good.

Decent story, awful narration

Why on earth did Tim McInnerny use such a wet soppy voice for Jensen? Spoils the story.

Badly read,

Lots of twists and turns and well worth the read! A smart determined journalist who doesn’t back down. Highly recommended

Tim McInnerny is faultless, of course! I will definitely seek out other books he has narrated now that I know he does this.

This book was (mostly*) a pleasure to listen to while I worked and I will search for other titles by this author. The "case" finishes but the story doesn't end so I'm guessing there will be other Jensen novels after this one. I found the characters well formed (undoubtedly aided by the expert narration) and I was definitely intrigued.

*A word of warning - if, like me, you are one of those "horrible" people who has more empathy for dogs than humans - there is a scene with a dog which made me rip my headphones off my head and toss them away! I gingerly went back to them after a few minutes - so I don't know exactly what happened (and don't want to) - but it was obviously nasty. I'm not a snowflake (way too old) but I just can't listen to any description of cruelty to animals, particularly dogs.

Engaging and expertly narrated

This Copenhagen based murder mystery was a compulsive listen with lots of twists and turns and kept me guessing to the end. Amsinck writes beautifully, instilling a creepy atmosphere whilst conjuring up a vivid picture of her home city. Jensen is a captivating and unusual female protagonist - I am genuinely intrigued by her and hope this is the first of many books so I can get to know her more. she is supported by an unusually strong cast of characters, all very well developed and interesting in their own right. All in all a superb debut novel - highly recommend if you want an intelligent and beautifully crafted detective story. Oh, and McInnerny's narration is absolutely spot on .

fantastic scandi noir - loved it

Really enjoyed this book. Scandi noir with a good plot, interesting characters and a top narration.

Lovely little gem

Excellent, really enjoyed this book, love this genre and it held its own along some of my favourite novels (scandi noir)

Best freebie I’ve listened too thus far

So the main character is a hotshot journalist except that she’s a shit journalist who can’t write the biggest story she’s ever come across and her colleagues have to support her. Her boss gives her way more chances than she ever deserves and asks her to look after a teenage boy. Her love life is rubbish because she only shags married men who are utterly charmless and yet everyone seems charmed by her. I’m afraid I wasn’t much more impressed by the narrator. It took time for the female leads voice and accent to settle in one place and generally his women were a hard listen.

Stupid people being stupid

A really well structured crime novel with expertly crafter characters that you form affinity’s for very quickly. Really enjoyable for something to be set in a city that isn’t London or New York etc
Cannot wait for more adventures of Jensen

An excellent listen

First time reading this author. Enjoyed the book. The plot was good and the characters interesting, though somewhat lacking in charm. Nice twist at the end.

Enjoyable
