About this listen

Meet DI Hillary Greene, a police woman with a thirs for justice and a career on the rocks....

A pretty French student is found dead in her room at an exclusive Oxford college. Everyone thinks it is another tragic case of accidental drug overdose. But Detective Hillary Greene has a nose for the truth. She quickly discovers that the student was involved in some very unusual activities.

With a shocking cause of death found, the case becomes a high-profile murder investigation. Adding to the pressure, Hillary’s nemesis is transferred to work with her at the station. Can Hillary keep her cool and get justice for the unfortunate student?

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to finish. Murder at the University is the second in a series of crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.

Great performance and the characters are beginning to seem like old friends (this is the second book of the series that I’ve read). A great twist at the end. I recommend this series.

Loved it

Good story without gratuitous violence whilst still dealing with difficult issues.
A number of interesting characters and background “romances “
A good read and I am now enjoying the series and will continue to follow Hilary’s career and personal life !

Likeable and believable protagonists

Ignore pedantic critics. Who cares if SOCO is pronounced soc-oh or soak-oh? Scone or scone? I really enjoyed the story and narration thank you

Narration perfect

A good story - but really the narration is by no means the best. I will continue the series for now...

Not brilliant

Interesting story with much better structure than the first book in the series (some of that may be because the main characters have already been established).

However, as with the first book, the narration is terrible. Poor pronunciation (although I was glad to hear SOCO being pronounced as a word rather than as initials this time around!), poor pacing and timing, making it difficult to distinguish between whose head we were in and who was saying what.

Interesting story let down by poor narration ( again!)

I am loving this series and will be looking forward to more nice to have a female detective

good read

This is very different (well for me anyway) and I am really enjoying it. The descriptions around Oxford work very well and I can relate to it. The relationships are becoming more known and the politics is very interesting. I don't understand the promotion politics but I have a better insight now than I did. The underlying story is still bubbling away in the background.. The crime itself is very interesting and absorbing and I like the various strands coming together.
Now straight onto book 3.

I do like the narration but reading the reviews I made a special effort to listen to anything that grated and I couldn't find anything but again that may because I am not a native British speaker and Australians have different pronunciations etc. I enjoyed listening.

Really enjoying this series

I’m enjoying the story but, as with the first in this series, The narration is sometimes distracting - some strange pronunciations and inflections, and it sometimes seems that the narrator is just reading words with no appreciation of the context. I hate to criticise, but when listening to a book the narrator is as important to me as the plot itself.

Irritating narration

Had I paid for this I would have returned it very quickly. The narration was far too fast - turned it to 0.9 which helped a bit - and the reader did not differentiate enough between characters. Pausing between them would have helped. I assume these books are directed or edited by someone and cannot understand why they do not correct these basic errors. If the narrator cannot change characters’ voices, why are they chosen?

I didn’t listen to it all, but the plot sounded so similar to so many other, better written, books that I doubt it had any surprises. There were so many stock phrases and cliches in the dialogue in the small amount I read, that I couldn’t carry on. Perhaps I didn’t give it sufficient time, but don’t think I will pick another by this author.

Couldn’t finish it

The story stood up and the author had spent time on making it all hang together. However, it was hard to keep going, because of the never ending use of cliches. It would have been enormously improved by good editing

ok story, ruined by never ending use of cliches
