About this listen

Winter, snow, murder—and a centuries-dead suspect.

In the chilly depths of a Yorkshire winter, a well-liked rector is found bludgeoned to death in her own church. With no sign of a murder weapon, local superstition quickly pins the blame on the ghost of a medieval monk believed to haunt the building...

Well accustomed to unusual murder investigations, DCI Jim Oldroyd takes on the case, along with his assistant, Sergeant Andy Carter, but they are hampered at every turn by the deepening snow and the threat of the supernatural. Even as possible motives and opportunities begin to reveal themselves, Oldroyd struggles to find a better suspect than the hooded phantom.

Has Oldroyd really found himself in the midst of a Gothic ghost story, or is there a very real killer at large? Spectre or otherwise, it soon becomes apparent that the murderer is not yet finished. And, for Oldroyd, it’s about to become personal...

Good characters and ingenious plot. Not 'gritty ' but all about the detection rather than the blood! The narrator performed well but had a rather elderly voice which made everyone sound like pensioners! Once you get past that, a most enjoyable listen.

Great whodunit.

As always a different story line with great characters. You learn things along with the detectives that keep you guessing till almost the end.

Good story with good characters

Really good read, just annoyed by calling sock-o ‘so co’ and Sharon ‘share-on’ but story great

Entering as ever

Another one just finished, good story line and the normal fussing to the end murderer.

I quite enjoyed the story, a little clunky at times, with too much discursive conversation to advance the plot lines but interesting.
But the narrator is awful. The accents were terrible, the homeless guy was the worst, the female characters were all
equally poor.
Spoiled the whole book for me.

Sorry the narrator spoiled this

Easy story to listen to . The plot was quite stereotypical. Some of the description was good and evoked a scene in the readers mind well.
I'd probably read this author again ,but not in any hurry to.e

Typical type of whodunit

One of my favourite authors and a fantastic book! I started this series by reading it but have stopped so I can listen instead!

Brilliant!

I’m surprised not to say revolted by the female critics of this novel. I was extremely pleased by the theme of anger against misogyny and homophobia and thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the attitudes of the police characters. Personally I’m an atheist and I think I came out of the womb waving a flag for Womens Lib (albeit in 1947 this movement hadn’t yet begun). There’s nothing wrong with authors having a strong point of view defending the rights of women and gays and including this in their novels. The story is well plotted and written and I felt I was there in the snow watching the characters interact. Good for you J R Ellis.
