This audiobook includes an exclusive Q&A with the author

Mei loses her Japanese mother at age six. Growing up in suburban Surrey, she yearns to fit in, suppressing not only her heritage but her growing desire for her best friend Fran.

Yuki leaves the Japanese countryside to pursue her dream of becoming a concert violinist in London. Far from home and in an unfamiliar city, she finds herself caught up in the charms of her older teacher.

Haruka attempts to navigate Tokyo's nightlife and all of its many vices, working as a hostess in the city's sex district. She grieves a mother who hid so many secrets from her, until finally one of those secrets comes to light . . .

Shifting between three intertwining narratives, Mongrel reveals a tangled web of desire, isolation, belonging and ultimately, hope.©2024 Hanako Footman (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

I first came to Hanako as a voice actor for Asako Yuzuki and was totally drawn in by both the writing and her performance. Once I found out about Mongrel I thought I’d give it a try. What a wonderful book of longing, regret, love, hurt and betrayal. Thank you Ms Footman, I was transported for days listening while working as a gardener! I can’t wait for my daughters to be old enough to read or listen to your fabulous work!

The story really is special, and how she weaves in and out of the characters lives is spellbinding!

In keeping with my new plan about what to listen to, I discovered that not only does Hanako Footman narrate books, she had also written one (which she also narrates). And what a book. It is so powerful. The first part should be read by all females. Actually, no, more than that it should be read, reflected upon, and internalised by males. I also enjoyed the Q&A at the end of the book with the author. While I started listening to the book in the UK, I finished it in Japan – which felt strangely appropriate. I will be revisiting this book and plan to get a printed copy and/or eBook version in due course.

It totally swept me up. So much of it is relatable as a woman and the difficulties we face in that journey we have of trying to find our home within us. That discomfort we feel internally growing up and that which is imposed on us. Also insightful for me as a white woman to understand more the added hurdles and racism that imposes upon women who are mixed race. I fell completely in love with the characters. I loved the use of metaphor and poetic style prose. Beautifully read by the author. Thankyou for writing this book

I got utterly lost in the beautiful prose and character journeys

This book is exceptionally written and the way the narrative slowly unravels and the stories weave together so beautifully. This book is a tapestry of life.

So
Beautifully expressed!
The story falls into one love jigsaw puzzle of golden rice field.——-maturity, ready to be harvested.
Hanako must be a poet. A Meistersinger!
Throughout the book beautiful light is shining through, even in ugly scenes. The quality of light evolves towards the end. Look forward to her next book read by her! Thank you for deep love you shared with readers.

Pain of separation and reassurance of union. You are beautiful as you are.

This has left me speechless! The interludes are incredible and the power of story being read by the author makes this magic. I found the book after listening to Butter, which Footman narrates too. Just beautiful! Truly beautiful!

It's easy to choose all manner of books and podcasts to listen to, but pleased I stumbled across this lovely literary work. The writing is descriptive to the point that the journey of listening was very absorbing.
I would love to see this as a film, as I think it would translate well.
The bonus was that the author was excellent at reading her own work.
Wonderful!!

What a find!
