About this listen

"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Wow.

Melville's book is a little laboured in the middle, he clearly took not only themes from the Bible but editorial style. The performance is fantastic, the voice actor brings it to life and sends chills down the spine.

Brilliant example of the finest type of audiobook

Whilst the material very interesting, engaging and rewarding, the performance of the reader is equalling memorable.

Moby Dick has many ‘additional’ chapters aimed an improving the readers understanding of the subject, which I can easily imagine are not for everyone - especially those keen to understand the ultimate outcome of the duel... However the performance makes even the most dry sections engaging. He makes the main story really memorable conjuring up believable realisations of the characters, not least conveying the true monomaniacal nature of the captain himself.

Narrator brought the story to life for me.

Moby Dick is one of the many books that I didn't read in my youth. I can say that whilst I may not return to it, the story will stay with me forever.

Beautifully written but too long

Classic yes, but aged way too much. the description of every aspect of whaling. would make sense to people without tv documentarieswho had never seen a whale but now it just drags. The plot is buried deep in encyclopedic description. listen to an abridged version use your time for other stories. Narration was very good. Story still good just too long with nothing happening.

Unbeatable performance

Whilst the pedigree and legacy of the book is undeniable, the performance here really brings to life all the themes, settings and characters.

Goin' a whaling.

As part of a personal challenge to tackle the big classics I have completed Moby Dick. I read the book together with the audio.
A profound read which has altered my opinions on several private bias including death and morality and the human occupation with hunting and killing.

Time to go a whaling

A long book that was not easy to navigate, made myself continue and was glad to get to the end
