About this listen

New York Times best seller

"None of this is real and all of it is true." (Jim Carrey)

Meet Jim Carrey. Sure, he's an insanely successful and beloved movie star drowning in wealth and privilege — but he's also lonely. Maybe past his prime. Maybe even...getting fat? He's tried diets, gurus, and cuddling with his military-grade Israeli guard dogs, but nothing seems to lift the cloud of emptiness and ennui. Even the sage advice of his best friend, actor, and dinosaur skull collector Nicolas Cage isn't enough to pull Carrey out of his slump.

But then Jim meets Georgie: ruthless ingénue, love of his life. And with the help of auteur screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, he has a role to play in a boundary-pushing new picture that may help him uncover a whole new side to himself — finally, his Oscar vehicle! Things are looking up!

But the universe has other plans.

Memoirs and Misinformation is a fearless semi-autobiographical novel, a deconstruction of persona. In it, Jim Carrey and Dana Vachon have fashioned a story about acting, Hollywood, agents, celebrity, privilege, friendship, romance, addiction to relevance, fear of personal erasure, our "one big soul", Canada, and a cataclysmic ending of the world — apocalypses within and without.

Critic reviews

“A mad fever dream... Carrey and his collaborator Vachon pull out all the stops as their protagonist Jim Carrey careens from midlife blues through love and career complications toward the apocalypse...gems of comic fantasy and the nuggets of memoir gold.” (Kirkus)

I loved this from start to finish, even though it stirred up emotions from within did not realise I was capable of feeling. I want it all to be real. I also want to be the only one to read it, although I realise keeping this from the rest of humanity would be a travesty.

Uninhibited megalomania

After a short while you're thinking "what the...?!" but once you abandon your reality it becomes a very entertaining and intriguing story. Narrator for once adds positively to the experience. The ending begs a sequel with the return of the ladies on the Triumph!

Unique and Moreish!

Let me begin by saying that I am a massive Jim Carrey fan. So it should come as no surprise to you that I was really very excited when I heard that he was writing a novel. And I was even more excited when the title of the novel had "memoirs" in it. I've always found Jim Carrey's personality, behind all the shabangg, to be very... otherworldly; as though he's unlocked some next level of living. And that is exactly why I love taking a deep dive into his mind. So I went in expecting just that. Instead, I got a fictional tale, that while also doing a deep dive of sorts into the outlandish mind of Jim Carrey, didn't really allow me to brush past false tales and land straight to reality.

The story did give me glimpses of what Jim Carrey is, but I finished the book a little perturbed and exhausted. It was a little pretentious, a little crazier than expected and a ride that overall disappointed more than excite.

All in all, dumb down your expectations and you're in for a ride.

Disappointed And Surprised

A funny and insightful critique of stardom in Hollywood. Really enjoyable and although it's a bit out there... it's also totally believable. God bless Nicolas Cage.
