About this listen

In Masters and Commanders Andrew Roberts describes how four titanic figures shaped the grand strategy of the West during the Second World War. The book attempts to give answers to key questions regarding allied strategy based on the personalities and relationships between two political masters - Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt - and the military commanders of their armed forces - the Chief of the Imperial General Staff, General Sir Alan Brooke, and the US Army Chief of Staff, General George C. Marshall. Each was exceptionally tough-willed and strong minded, and each was certain that he knew best how to win the war. Yet each knew that he had to win at least two of the others over in order to get his strategy adopted. The book traces the mutual suspicion and admiration, the rebuffs and the charm, the often explosive disagreements and wary reconciliations which resulted.

The most absorbing and informative book in my library. Completely researched across the whole war.

The reading and editing.

A well researched, well told, very well narrated book, that describes in a thoughtful and insightful manner the dealings of the key decision makers from the US and the UK during World War II. It's thoroughly enjoyable, surprisingly so.
There is a lot to know, about personalities, relationships, decision making processes that ended, successfully, with the defeat of nazi Germany and Japan.
Narration is top notch.
HIghly recommended.

Superb

Told from the perspective of the four main players, Churchill, Rooseveldt, Marshall, and Brooke. It gives an insiders view from personal diary entries about how the major decisions about Western strategy were arrived at. The reader has a gift for mimicry, and accurately reflects the accent and speech patterns of the main players.
References to the names of the various operations can sometimes be confusing, but it is worth persevering for the many insights not available from other sources. There is an excellent summary at the end. I enjoyed the book and learned a lot.

A comprehensive review of WW2 world strategy

There are countless, better written reviews of this work, but the quality of narration is superlative.

Outstanding piece

What a superb book. It filled in many of the gaps and explains in understandable detail the course of the war managed behind the scenes by some truly brilliant people who deserve our high regard.
