About this listen

Good-hearted Bessie has been taking care of her ailing father for 20 years. But now she's the one who's sick, and she must reconcile with her estranged sister, Lee.

A remarkably humorous and tender play, this critically acclaimed family drama was dubbed by The New York Times as "one of the funniest plays of the year as well as one of the wisest and most moving."

Marvin’s Room is Scott McPherson’s award-winning play about two very different sisters, Bessie and Lee. Heroic Bessie almost singlehandedly takes care of their ailing father while also struggling with leukemia herself, while the erratic Lee prefers to drift through life by the whims of the wind.

This powerful stage dramatization about love, death, and family, and told in front of a live audience, features performances by Academy Award winner Mary Steenburgen, Roxanne Hart of Highlander fame, and Stephen Weber of the acclaimed television show, Wings. Marvin’s Room was also adapted into a 1996 film, starring a young Leonardo DiCaprio.
