About this listen

 Originally serialized between 1843-1844, Dickens' story tells of Martin, the grandson of old Martin Chuzzlewit, who is rich but has become bittter due to the greed of his kin. Young Martin is initially selfish but through hard labour and the positive and cheerful influence of his servant, Tapley, becomes decent.

The novel is broken up into segments by young Martin's voyage to seek his fortune in America. This allowed the author to satirically portray the US.

Charles Dickens (1812 - 9 June 1870) is arguably the greatest novelist England ever produced.

I was to begin, but reaching the end everything made sense. As the title portrays you expect Martin to play a major part, not so for the majority of the book although he was not very far away. Glad I percevered and listened to everyone get their just deserts.

I had to stop listening to this because the narration was getting in the way of the story. The narrator regularly stumbles over words and corrects himself, the voice characterization isn't consistent from chapter to chapter, and you can hear the narrator turning the page of the script. Not the best.

It's really difficult to listen to this version, as the narration is littered with mistakes, on virtually every page. The narrator speaks clearly, but I'm very much unused to listening to audio books with so many stumbles and slips, which often cause me to lose focus. Surely these errors should have been dealt with at the editing stage? Also, as a previous reviewer noted, you can even hear the pages being turned! Almost everything else I've bought from Audible has been top quality in every way, so this is a disappointment.
