About this listen

They were a band of mysterious private detectives who lived beneath the streets of London....

London, 1958.

Elaborately disguised and hidden deep beneath the city's streets lies the world of Miss Brickett's, a secret detective agency. From traversing deceptive escape rooms, to engineering almost magical mechanical gadgets, apprentice detectives at Miss Brickett's undergo rigorous training to equip them with the skills and knowledge they will need to solve the mysteries that confound London's police force.

But nothing can prepare 23-year-old apprentice Marion Lane for what happens after the arrest of her friend and mentor Frank on suspicion of murder: he tasks Marion with clearing his name and saving his life. Her investigation will place Marion and her friends in great peril as they venture into the forbidden maze of uncharted tunnels that surround Miss Brickett's. Being discovered out of bounds means immediate dismissal, but that is the least of Marion's problems....

This is the first installation in a fantastical historical mystery series for fans of Stuart Turton's The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and Natasha Pulley's The Watchmaker of Filigree Street.

Same old tosh

I do wish Audible would properly label YA fiction. There’s some excellent stuff around but I wouldn’t have bought this if I’d realised. Anyway, it’s a sort of Hogwarts for detectives. Despite it being a job, everyone still talks about it being their 1st or 2nd year and no one has a life outside. My main concern is that the heroine (a dreary little mouse who just wants her house back) is utterly reliant on men. She has no female friends and her relationships are with a pseudo-father figure, the sexless best friend and the new boy. The head of of the agency is supposed to be a strong female leader but is totally out of touch with what is going on on her watch. Do better!

OK but could do with a bit of an edit

There are so many good books around these days so it feels really sad when what could be a really good one is left down by the lack of a tight edit. This is a fun story and I really like the ideas behind it but the writing is a bit loose and it ends up not quite as exciting as it should be as a result. The narrator does her best to keep it going and there's plenty of potential. Just not quite there yet...
