Simply put, another 3 hours and 19 minutes of literary bliss. Neither Simenon nor Maigret fail to hit anything but a bullseye. Perfection.

It's 1964, the TV age, but Maigret's customary interview methods still pay off as they did in the 1930s. A varied story of shady doings in the art world of rich collectors, with several puzzles for Maigret to solve. A wide gallery of characters from a beautiful heiress, her much older husband who initially makes the big mistake of talking down to working class Maigret, to a filthy old recluse who spends his time at the window watching the world go by. The trigger of the investigation is the street shooting of dear Inspector Lognon, the luckless police intelligence gatherer who can't pass his exams but who aspires to be like Maigret. He's an instinctive and dogged investigator who is on the right track, but gets too close and spends the novel in a coma. Maigret has respect and a soft spot for this recurrent character. Is Simenon making a critique of the increasingly academic modern world? Would Maigret, a gamekeeper's son with a deep understanding of human nature, have risen to chief of detectives in the later twentieth century?

Another excellent Maigret story. As well read as ever by Gareth Armstrong. This one revolves around the international art world, but for Maigret, comes from nowhere, so he has to move quickly while those involved are still in Paris. Simenon’s ability to convey events swirling around our protagonist, both within his control and beyond it, is wonderfully conveyed.
One of the best things about the Maigret stories is that you can start almost anywhere amongst the many novels and can quickly pick up the characters, both regular and particular, and make sense of the plot. Once you do get to know the staff at the Quai des Orfévre, you begin to notice aspects to the many detectives. The various tv series are generally well done, but necessarily cut down the number of policemen involved. The various twists and turns are always well done, but also within the basis of the plot itself. There are no deus ex machinas from Simenon! If you’re in any doubt, I’d give it a listen.

I have listened to about a half of the Maigret stories and have discovered some really great ones but also detected a slight weakness in the writing of Simenon, and that is to weave a wonderful tale only to let you down at the end with a hurried and often implausible ending. I have even returned thee because right from the word go the storyline was ridiculous. With Maigret and the Ghost however, there are no flaws. It is a great novel which I recommend very highly. Also, let us not omit the quite superb narration by Gareth Armstrong which, whether the storyline rains or shines, is just perfection.
