Simenon is unique and untouchable in the genre of procedural police novels. Maigret is a creation of wonder and beauty. This is a three and one half hour novel of sheer literary brilliance, like all of the Maigret stories, so superbly read by the magnificent Gareth Armstrong, it moves at such a rapid pace you feel like you've only been listening for a half hour at most. Quite remarkable authorship.

The joy of Simenon is whilst you are engulfed in a cracking murder mystery, & the mood of Maigret & his loyal team, you are also experiencing atmospheric social commentary, in this case the illusion of great wealth & perhaps the fear of losing it.
