About this listen

Inspector Maigret is meant to be taking a holiday, but he can't resist following the development of his colleague Janvier's case in the papers - and playing a few tricks on the way.

Standing at the window in the middle of the morning, vaguely observing the comings and goings in the street, he had a feeling that reminded him of certain days in his childhood, when his mother was still alive and he was off school because he had the flu or it was the end of term. It was the feeling of finding out what went on when he wasn't there.

The story was excellent except for the end which was rather ordinary and unsurprising. I have found this to be the case with many Maigret stories. A real highlight with all those I have listened to is the quite superb narration of Gareth Armstrong. His voice “is” Maigret and fits Simenon’s description. I just listen to his voice and picture Michael Gambon (certainly NOT Rowan Mr Bean Atkinson) and then you really have Maigret, in person.

Great story, wonderful narration - as usual.

We take walks around Paris with Inspector M, he reads the papers and drinks aperitifs.
Very well read, good voices.

Great story, lovely details.

A perfect reading of a perfect novel by the perfect Gareth Armstrong. Maigret is removed from his beloved office to play amateur sleuth and does so with his typically impatient humanity and decency while displaying his vexatiousness with not being able to join all of the dots using his "little grey cells", more Belgian Poirot like than I've seen in other Simenon novels. The structural changes of the novel, compared with other Maigret stories, add wonderfully to the telling of the story.

Simenon meets Christie.
