What more can be said other than Gareth Armstrong is superb in narrating the novels of one of the world's greatest ever writers. Maigret Defends Himself is another classic by an author whose quality literally never falls beneath genius.

Outstanding.

More than 30 years and literally dozens of books after Simenon wrote his first Maigret story, he would be forgiven for letting the quality slide a little. The fact that he didn’t just shows what a genius he was. This is an elegant mystery, brilliantly paced and plotted. I literally gasped at one or two of the twists, which probably led other dog walkers to wonder if I’d just had bad news. The prose is seamless, the dialogue alive. One of the best Maigrets.

This is without doubt one of the best Maigret stories which holds you right from the beginning and (almost) to the end. The plot and dialogue are truly exceptional and the narration, by Gareth Armstrong, could not be . However, the end is rather ludicrous and implausible. A let down.

Without doubt one of the best Maigret stories.
