About this listen

When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together; Waters and Murray are still there, but one of Wilson's men is transferred to him, and the female detective constable from Longmarsh poses some unexpected problems for her new sergeant. Together they begin to investigate the links between the companies and the people that bring ashore the oil and gas, and they also find themselves caught up in the seamier side of life that exists beneath Lake's everyday comings and goings. Jo Evison begins to delve more deeply into the story of the Andretti murders, and Smith himself has to face the fact that he might no longer be considered fit for duty.

A gem

I really loved this book. My 3rd book in the series and I now feel either an affinity and affection for the characters or a sympathetic dislike!
Can’t recommend Peter Grainger and DC too highly!

Another good story well told

This narrator is perfect for the main character of Smith, he does have some rather odd pronunciations of some words, Peugeot for example!
The story itself is good and held our interest, the story unfolds nicely and includes lots of additional bits like background facts and references to the previous book's case.
Definitely going to listen to the next book!

DS Smith grows on you

Having usually chosen more gritty detectives - I'm feeling rather surprised at how beguiling D C Smith is becoming. His off beat but gentle humour and his problem solving processes are delightful. A word to the narrator - though quite competent generally some pronunciations are a bit off and he could certainly do with a tour of 'the toon' in order to make realistic inroads into a 'Geordie' accent. ( Afraid it was completely dreadful)

Great writing and great narration

High quality writing and the story has a lovely slow burn with a convincing careful build-up of clues. The narrator was great all round but especially seemed to me to give D C Smith just the right voice. As another reviewer said about these Grainger books, it's a nice surprise to find something of this quality in the Plus catalogue.

An excellent listen

I've listened to a few of these Seargant Smith books now and they are beautifully constructed with excellent but not unnecessary descriptions of the Norfolk coast where the action happens. Its always like a book one can't put down. The narrator is excellent too and brings the characters to life brilliantly.

Great story

Really like the narrator who brings the story to life and at times makes you so engaged you make the facial expressions described. Story was interesting and not obvious. Well worth a listen.

A detective to believe in.

Best detective since Morse with an understated wit that is, at moments, laugh out loud funny. As an ex cop, the characters and plots ring unmistakably true and DC Smith is an absolute gem.

Characters

Good story built on believable and interesting characters. The story builds on the main character, who the writer describes in such a way so the reader cares about his loss, likes his personality and all the other well defined characters ...swirl around him, as the story unfolds.
