يسرد الروائي السعودي محمد الزهراني في هذه الرواية سيرة تاريخية موجزة للمجاهدين العرب الذين ذهبوا للجهاد في أفغانستان خلال فترة الثمانينيات، فأُطلق عليهم حينذاك اسم الأفغان العرب. وتنفتح هذه السيرة من خلال رحلة الاصدقاء الثلاثة سند وسليمان وعيد( وهو الراوي) إلى قندهار. أولهم بدوي مغامر عاطل عن العمل، والثاني مديني وسيم رقيق الطباع، والثالث لم يكن معدله في الثانوية جيداً، ولم يُقبل في كلية الضباط لوجود مشكلة جسمانية، فيجد القناعة، عبر المشايخ وحلقات الدرس، إلى طريق آخر هو النصرة والجهاد.
