About this listen

Bewildering but interesting

Often difficult to follow this novel is however worth the effort. At first it is hard to realise that the narrator is a Mexican TOWN but soon strongly drawn characters and dramatic incidents hold your attention and create vivid images of a harsh society dominated by military men and apparently subjugated women. Knowledge of Mexican history would help the ordinary reader but the editors of this audiobook do provide three helpful essays at the end of the novel.
