About this listen

One of the hobbies of Charles Lindley Wood, 2nd Viscount Halifax, was the collection of gruesome tales of the supernatural. These stories were told to him by friends, acquaintances and sent to him by strangers, and he duly recorded them in a book over the course of his long life - he lived to be 94.

This is the complete collection in one volume.

  • "The Harper of Inverary
  • "The Man in the Iron Cage"
  • "The Secret of Glamis"
  • "The Grey Man of Wrotham"
  • "The Haunting of Hinton Ampner
  • "The Death of Lord Tyrone"
  • "The Passenger with the Bag
  • "Marche!"
  • "The Man in a Silk Dress"
  • "The Strange Experience of the Reverend Spencer Nairne"
  • "The Renishaw Coffin"
  • "The Butler in the Corridor"
  • "The Telephone at the Oratory"

A fascinating collection, but my partner and I were both convinced the reading was computer generated, like a bad tube announcement. Very grating intonation. Sorry if you are a real person, but wouldn't buy again. Audible really need to step up their quality control.

Interesting catalogue but very strange reading.

I first read this as a child in the 70s ; it’s still a great book . The only let down is the annoying drawl of the narrator why oh why she elongates the last syllable of the last word in each sentence …. So annoying ….. so unnecessaryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Great book AWFUL narration !

l agree the narration isn't the best; the narration sounds very monotonous and whiney, so if your easily irritated this book will not be for you. The book would sound better narrated by someone such as Peter Yearsly.
l however, persevered with this book and found that after several stories the narration didn't seem to bother me as much.

Good stories ....

These classic ghost stories are reduced to a joke by a woman who reads them as if impersonating the love-child of Stephen Toast and Frank Spencer. These are without a shadow of a doubt the strangest intonations and pronunciations ever included within Audible.

Case in point

' I enquired as to the weatheeeeeeeerrrrr'
' She heard futstahps and didn't know whaaaat to make of it'

Sack her, get a re-record Audible.

The worst reading of any audible book ever...
