About this listen

A powerful story of two families over three generations, from award-winning author Freya North.

In the 1960s, Florence, a pregnant 16-year-old, is banished to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Years later, Nell and Dougie are both at critical moments in their lives when their paths cross.

Sometimes who we are goes way beyond where we are from. What happened to Florence? Why is Dougie so reluctant to return home? How can Nell make peace with the lies she's been told?

As the lives of these three people collide and interweave, the search for truth uncovers long-kept secrets. Little Wing is a story about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one’s place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone.

Cuddle up on a sofa book

Freya North took me to Harris. I was there, on the beach, soaking up the landscape and appreciating the rich history. I knew the characters, felt their pain, their hopes, their fears and their love. Sofia Engstrand narrated this book perfectly and I hung on her every word. Thank you.

Really enjoyed listening to this beautifully written story of a child’s search for her mother!

Sadness

I kept on thinking it was the end and it kept going. Lovely written but too long and slow paced for my taste. Lovely setting and descriptions of Harris

Beautiful narration and accents were sympathetic to an regions

A beautiful captivating novel. The storyline and characters are written so expertly. There is a true sense of place throughout the novel, especially in the authors beloved Harris. The depictions of the wild and spellbinding landscape conjure up a true sense of life on the island then and now.
The way Freya North presents the subjects of grief, loss and homecoming was profound.
She writes from a point of knowing the human condition deeply and the nuances of such complex emotion. A profound and compelling read. I implore you to pick up Little Wing. There truly is something magical in this novel. Booking my crossing to Harris asap.

A true family saga which had me gripped

Having read Freya's previous books and this been my first audiobook by her, I wasn't disappointed.
A lovely family saga with heartwarming characters. The story had twists and turns which kept me listening.

This will always live in my heart rent free!

I read my first Freya North book at the age of 17.
Over the 20 years that have followed, I have read each and every other of Freya's 14 books, more than once.
I have always found a certain happiness and inner peace when reading Freyas books and have revelled in the pages,  sharing them with my mum and sister who are also avid Freya fans.
I eagerly awaited Little Wing and had my pre order in as soon as it was available.
I received my hard back through the post but ended up listening to it on audible as it works so well with my busy schedule.

Sophia Engstrand did a fantastic job of narrating and has such a soothing and calming voice.

From the very first chapter, I felt as though I was being hugged by an old friend.
Freya's writing style, although refined over the years, is unmistakable to me.

Little Wing is such a beautiful story. It's filled with sadness tinged with plenty of joy and that feeling that fills your heart.

Freya describes the Outter Hebrides in such a way, that I feel as though I've been there, and it's left its mark on my heart.

The characters are surely living, breathing people, because I met them the day I started reading, and they will stay with me for life.

I hung on as long as I could before listening to the epilogue because I couldn't bear for it to be over.
I would happily spend the rest of my days following Nell, Flora and Douggie through theirs.

To summarise, I would highly recommend this beautiful story to anyone. I really mean anyone.
If you haven't read this book, you are missing out.

Now to go book my flight to Harris!

Excellent storytelling.

I enjoyed every minute of this. The characters were loveable and realistic as was their dialogue. It was a very believable story. The presence of the island of Harris was like a wonderful extra character.
It gave the book a fascinating dimension. The length of the book gave the story and characters room to breathe. The performance was just right. I’m extremely glad I came across it and would highly recommend. It is a very whole and intelligent novel.

Little Wing - a joy to listen to

Thoroughly enjoyed this multi layered story of a family history and its secrets as they were slowly revealed through the various characters. Not forgetting the stunning descriptions of the story’s northern setting. Another character in its one right.

Brilliant story

Could not stop listening. A great story, excellent description of the Scottish Highlands, which has made me want to visit. Loved the characters and wanted so much for Nel to find her Mum. It's emotional and I cried, that's a sign of a good book.

Like a big hug

This was a beautiful book. A little slow moving but wonderful prose and warm characters that bring you right into their world.
