About this listen

Through his pioneering work in the legendary country-punk band Uncle Tupelo, to his enduring legacy as the creative force behind the unclassifiable sound of Wilco, Jeff Tweedy has weaved his way between the underground and the mainstream - and back again.

Funny, disarming and deeply honest, his memoir casts light on his unique creative process and the stories that shaped his life and career, from a childhood spent in Illinois to the release of No Depression in the early '90s - which set the blueprint for alt-country - and later working with Mavis Staples and, posthumously, Woody Guthrie.

Gotta say this is a lovely mix of sad, inspiring and beautifully vulnerable account of Jeff’s life. Was genuinely sad when it ended.

Inciteful, wise and with a wry humour - Jeff reads his biography very well. Essential for Wilco fans!

So much more than a standard rock biography

I really enjoyed listening to this rather than reading it. Hearing from “the horse’s mouth” adds another layer to this very thoughtful, reflective and interesting autobiography. I got a real sense of Jeff Tweedy, the person, and his life and growth so far. Not just as a Wilco/Jeff Tweedy fan, but just as another human being.

Superb autobiography worth listening to read by the author

This is one of the best music autobiography’s. Honest and balanced. I wasn’t a huge Wilco fan (before) listening to this. But Jeff’s story got me to explore his whole musical universe and gave me a great insight into his wonderful artistry. He comes across as such a humble likeable person. Highly recommended.

A really insightful listen, Jeff goes through his journey from Uncle Tupelo to where Wilco are today, covering everything you'd want to know. He's very honest about why Uncle Tupelo split, the reasons for members of Wilco coming and going and his battle with addiction. I loved hearing about his musical influences, how he started with punk (very similar to the Beastie Boys) and progressed into all kinds of styles and influences that we often hear in his music today. I particularly liked how he describes the process he uses to put together songs, that its often the music then the lyrics. A must for Wilco fans, thoroughly enjoyable, especially as he reads himself.

Wilco will love you

Listens like all Jeff audio warm, funny and interesting with deep insight. The vocal is like a friend telling you about himself. The parts with spencer and suzie are unexpected and tremendous.
I loved this better than just reading the book, like a modern memoir should be.

Best performance of an audiobook I’ve heard.
