Le bus de Taulignan arrive en gare de Chamaret avec, à son bord, un seul passager. Quand celui-ci ne débarque pas au Terminus, le chauffeur, pensant qu'il dort, s'en va le réveiller, mais l'homme est dans son ultime sommeil... un songe éternel ! Une balle a mis fin à sa vie...
Les gendarmes appelés sur les lieux ne trouvent aucun papier sur le défunt, mais parviennent à déterminer qu'il est probablement d'origine américaine...
Très vite, il est établi que son dernier acte avant de prendre l'autocar fut de rendre visite à un semblant d'ermite vivant à l'écart du bourg.
Le lendemain, on retrouve l'ascète mort d'un coup de poignard dans le cœur...
