"J'écris des romans pour raconter des histoires. Depuis longtemps, j'en avais une qui me courait dans la tête et qui se déroulait dans l'Allemagne nazie du siècle dernier, en Bavière. Une histoire d'amour, d'amitié.

Malgré toutes mes lectures sur la période hitlérienne, je n'ai jamais réussi à comprendre pourquoi tant d'Allemands "bien" respectables, avaient pris à la légère la montée du nazisme tandis que les Juifs tardaient étrangement à fuir. Par quelle aberration, à cause de quelles complaisances, quelles lâchetés, le nazisme fut-il possible? Qu'était-il arrivé à ce grand pays de musiciens, de philosophes et de poètes? Ces questions-là n'ont jamais cessé de me hanter.

Je crois que l'histoire d'Élie, Elsa, Lila, Karl et les autres apporte quelques clés. Après tout, il n'y a que les fous pour tenter de répondre à ce genre de questions, les fous ou les personnages de roman."
