At times I felt that there were parts of the story which were too long and didn’t enhance or add anything. At one point I could have given up. But I persevered and I’m glad as it was a moving and interesting story.

Love stories at war times are touching and memorable. This book however has more than one love story and they are equally beautiful depicting the ugliness of war and the capability of the humans of sacrifice and generosity.

A wonderful story from the perspective of four individuals against the background of post war Istanbul in 1921. Lucy Foley's descriptions of the rich tastes and smells of the fruit and spices, the heat and the views across the Bosporus made me feel I was there.
However, these four people have all suffered grief and loss and are having to deal with this in their own way.
I definitely recommend this book.

Gorgeous descriptions take you right to the heat of the story and you immediately become so involved in the characters lives. The characters are incredibly realistic, afflicted by the tragedies of war they are devastatingly human and you can't not empathise with their plights.
Loved the story. Very interesting to read from a historical angle also. Beautifully written.

This books unfolds gently but is full of poignancy to the end. Beautifully read by someone who has a brilliant grasp of accents and the pace at which the book needs to be read. Sad that it’s ended
