I read The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, which was a free book from Audible and enjoyed it so much, I purchased this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the classic writing and the involved story kept me gripped.

Brilliantly read story which was captivating from beginning to end. Author shows good use of English, and doesn’t talk down to her readers. It shows how much beauty our language has lost over the last hundred years. - not forgetting that the story and plotting is first rate. No wonder that it was a best-seller..

Captivating

Lots of twists and turns in this pseudo-detective story in the same genre as Wilkie Collins. This is had me hooked from the beginning. The only drawback was the narration. Whilst it was good the attempt at accents was painful to hear - particularly since the book was set mainly outside of London. At one point a boy from near the Customs House in Liverpool is speaking. His accent is that awful Liverpudlian that seems to have been passed from drama student to drama student, Chinese whisper manner, without reference back to its source. It's garbled nonsense. At the time this book was set a boy near the docks would have had a local Lancashire, Irish, Welsh Swedish, German or even Chinese accent not a hybrid. The city was the largest port city in the world and had grown extremely fast - very much like New York for example. If, for simplicity, you want to do a modern Liverpool accent, please come to the city and choose from the still varied number of them. Even the North Wales accent would be closer than this.

Excellent story

Initially I wasn’t certain I wanted to hear a 19th century novel, not being certain that I had the focus to keep up with the literary style in which it would be written. However, the tale itself is gripping and the narration excellent. I now have a taste for this style of novel!
