Trois années de silence passent alors. Nous retrouvons Mérey au théâtre, à Paris, en 1796. Par hasard, il aperçoit Eva dans une loge. Ils se rencontrent, mais Jacques repousse Eva. Celle-ci, désespérée, se sauve pour aller se jeter dans la Seine...
Le docteur se met à sa poursuite, la sauve, mais repousse toujours son amour. Elle offre de devenir sa servante et de lui remettre tous ses biens afin qu'il fonde un hospice dans le château de son père. Comme il accepte, elle retourne s'installer dans la maison du médecin à Argenton tandis qu'il règle la liquidation de ses biens à Paris. C'est là qu'il découvre le journal qu'elle lui a laissé, dans lequel elle raconte sa vie en son absence.
