Il romanzo uscì nel 1859 sulla rivista fondata dallo stesso Dickens, come strenna di Natale. La storia tratta di una casa infestata dai fantasmi, in cui un gruppo di amici decide di passare le feste di Natale; ogni racconto racconta l'esperienza di ognuno degli amici, nella stanza da lui occupata.
