Sommer 1926. Der Berliner Kommissar Ernst Gennat wird wegen eines Mordfalles nach Hohenschönhausen gerufen. Aber als er am Tatort eintrifft, fehlt von der Leiche jede Spur. Zwei Zeugen können allerdings das angebliche Opfer gut beschreiben. Und ein Taxifahrer will eine auf die Beschreibung passende Frau gefahren haben. Sie trug eine auffällige, mit grünen Steinen besetzte Brosche – ein seltenes Schmuckstück. Auf einem Pressefoto taucht diese Brosche wieder auf. Aber wer ist die Trägerin? Gennat steht vor einem Rätsel und spannt mal wieder seinen langjährigen Freund ein, den Polizeireporter Max Kaminski. Kann er Gennat helfen?
