About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From internationally renowned writer and Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie, a searing, deeply personal account of enduring - and surviving - an attempt on his life thirty years after the fatwa that was ordered against him

Speaking out for the first time, and in unforgettable detail, about the traumatic events of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie answers violence with art, and reminds us of the power of words to make sense of the unthinkable. Knife is a gripping, intimate, and ultimately life-affirming meditation on life, loss, love, art - and finding the strength to stand up again.

Chapter 6 is essential reading, and outstanding. In this chapter he has an imaginary conversation with his assailant. The other chapters are not of the same quality but still good :)

A difficult listen. But good..very good. A treatise on ‘the knife’ - very prescient for our times. Thank you Salman. I hope you continue to recover

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I rarely revisit books, but I want to listen to this one again to fully absorb its message. I'm glad to hear the author has found peace; it's true that life is worth living and love truly conquers all.

A sincere and authentic viewpoint on the events, with the author guiding you as a passenger on his journey.

The reading of this moving account of the attack on Rushdie’s life and his subsequent recovery is an astonishing achievement. Rushdie did not simply survive the attack on his life, he triumphed and rendered his attacker irrelevant, neither worthy to be forgiven, nor not to be forgiven. Helpful for all who suffered PTSD but we are all lucky that he survived and turned his experience into this book. May many more follow.

My favourite author, loved listening to the book.
Like him I also come from Muslim background and the Book he wrote and got into a real trouble is a perfect reflection of the religion him and I came from.
When modern people talk about how this religion is perfect and peaceful, first try to live as a woman in this religion. It controls women and generally a sad religion which can’t take any criticism.
Salman Rushdie’s books, especially that very Book have been helpful for me to stay a bit stronger knowing that there are people who relate to me with their thoughts and bravery.
Thank you.

Honest reflection of the amazing writer’s terrifying experience

Mr Rusdie lays out and relives the terrible events of that day in a well structured organised sometimes surprisingly emotive manner

Profoundly moving

A lucid gaze not only into the effects - physical and emotional- of this horrific attack but also a reflection on the A, the attacker, and the culture that spawned him. It is a relief and a joy to know that Salman has not been diminished by it, in spite of the obvious physical wounds. Thank you for reading this yourself Salman. Be happy.

Honest, moving, painful
