È il 27 ottobre 1968. Siamo praticamente al sipario. Si corre la gara di chiusura: la maratona. A vincerla è l'etiope Mamo Wolde, ma non sarà lui quello che verrà ricordato.
Il protagonista vero è invece uno sconosciuto atleta della Tanzania che si chiama John Stephen Akhwari che al chilometro diciannove cade e si fa male. Ha una spalla malconcia, una gamba sanguinante. Non è neanche in grado di appoggiare il piede e il traguardo è lontano. Lontanissimo: 23 chilometri. Ma come dice un antico proverbio africano "Mille passi cominciano sempre da uno".
