Growing up in the small town, conservative confines of southern Texas, her native Port Arthur didn’t have a whole lot to offer the artistically inclined. Joplin headed out west and made it big with Big Brother and the Holding Company in San Francisco, California, before embarking upon a solo career. She would record two solo albums, showcasing her immense talent and unique style, before her sudden and unexpected demise in 1970.
