About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Jack of Hearts (And Other Parts) by L.C. Rosen, read by Drew Caidan.

My first time getting it in the butt was kind of weird. I think it's going to be weird for everyone's first time, though.

Jack Rothman is seventeen. A solid student with a talent for art, he likes partying, makeup and boys. Sometimes all at the same time. His active, unashamed sex life makes him a red hot topic for the high school gossip machine, but Jack doesn't really care too much about what the crowd is saying about him. His mantra is: 'It could be worse.'

And then it is.

When Jack starts writing a teen sex advice column for his best friend's website, he begins to receive creepy and threatening love letters. His 'admirer' is obsessed with Jack - they know who he's hanging out with, who he's sleeping with, who his mum is dating. And while they say they love Jack, they don't love his lifestyle. They want him to curb his sexuality and personality. And if he won't, they will force him.

As his stalker starts to ratchet up the pressure, it's up to Jack and his friends to uncover their identity, before their love becomes genuinely dangerous.

Top 5 favourite books

100% this story needs breaks whilst reading as it can be too much, the turning point was definitely after jack gets (mild spoiler) the notes threating his friends, after listening to that note I had to take a break and take a shower, so just be careful and take it slow. However, I do think that's a food thing as both the writing and voice acting were amazing to make me feel like that.

However, I do think its problematic how nothing came from Jack's 1st time being abusive with him just shutting it off, additionally I feel like the ending was rushed like the author had a tight word count which was unfortunate leading to the final confrontation seeming a little evil villain "Heres my evil plan" monalogy and the aftermath being very very breezed over which is unfortunate.

Although, I loved the sex advice in this book, haveing taught myself SRE (Sex and relationships education) for the past 5 ish years it made me so happy for it to be such good and true/helpful advice additionally the clearly showing LGBT+ sex in a Y/A novel was amazing. (Hannah Witton's 'Doing It' podcast expands on that point)

TL;DR -
Like Love Simon? This is a black mirror version of that story almost like what if Martin was blue.

Like Netflix's Sex Education? This book has (in my opinion) better sex advice for readers especially for LGBT readers.

Grippingly Intense & Relatable

A fantastically told story with an intense and relatable plot, each step follows and is understandable. Even when you’re shouting at the speaker, telling him not to, you can understand why he did.

Fantastic sex advice, great to have realistic and correlative timelines for what happens when.

An awesome novel well written, cohesive and believable. Real gay classic. Should be mandatory reading for any guy just coming out.

Funny & Dark

This is histerical at times, dark at other times. Loved the sex columb questions. Only wish they had online blogs whist i was at school.

Surprisingly emotional

This book was a lot of fun. Mainly because Jack and his friends were a lot of fun. But as it went on, it became less fun and more heartbreaking. The way you could see (hear?) Jack's personality being smothered by the fear & stress & worry. The thoughts he would have about the stalker being just another part of his life, something he got used to & could endure if he had to. So tough to listen to.

The side characters were well-rounded and vivid - I just ADORED Nance - and Jack's little trio of best friends were amazing.

Also, the narrator was amazing. Honestly, I never knew it was possible to make a copyright notice sound sexy!

Good, but not great.

It was a good story, I enjoyed it. But at the same time, I wasn't blown away.
It was also refreshing to read an LGBT story that didn't exactly center around a relationship, but just an ordinary boy dealing with a complication (blackmail).
The narrator deserves full marks for his reading.
I would recommend this story to others.

Entertaining, relatable & educational

jack was very likeable as a character n the mystery kept me invested in the story. his column was weirdly educational on sexual topic too. the only flaw i can see is the reveal of the culprit was quite sudden n not that convincing. overall a great read n would recommend.

I expected more fun

I thought this would be more fun, but it should have been shorter. I understand, when you are 16 and anxious, you tend to think the same things over and over again and not getting to a solution, but please spare readers the constant recurrence of the same thoughts.
Who the culprit was, was obvious to me from the beginning, making it hard to keep listening because there was no other arc.

The sex column though was very informative and correct, so I hope this novel will be translated soon, then I can give it to my son as soon as he becomes sexually active.
